I volunteered at the February Pop-up Swap Shop and I enjoyed my experience! I had been to one of these before and donated a couple items, but I learned more things having to work there as well. I was responsible for letting people know of the purpose of the pop-up shop as being a sustainable alternative to fast fashion, and I had to input new people into the credit system since it was their first time. I'll definitely be back at one of these events in the future, if not volunteering at it then just using up my credits! The only real downside to the experience was standing in the cold for 2 hours, but we powered through!

I volunteered to help set up the annual lights and luminaries event. I worked multiple shifts and did a few different activities. In the morning shift, I helped with the initial placing of the luminaries along with two other volunteers. I had to use a yard stick to perfectly space out each luminary. About halfway through my first afternoon shift, we were instructed to stop placing the real candles, and to switch them all out with battery powered tea lights, as the candles were deemed a fire hazard because of the wind speeds. This was definitely a sudden change, and I could tell the organizers were feeling stressed about it, but luckily they were more than prepared, and all the candles were switched out in no time. It was really cool to be a part of setting up this beloved campus tradition, and I loved seeing it come together as the sun went down. However, my body is now paying the price after 5 hours of constant bending up and down.

    October Blood Drive Registration Volunteer

I'd never been to a blood drive before this one, and since I'm not big on needles, I figured I'd support the cause by volunteering for registration. This was my first time working at a registration table for any event so there were definitely a couple things to get used to. My volunteer partner handled the computer and inputting donors ID information into it, while I asked their name, ticked them off on the list and wrote out a name tag for them. I arguably had the easier job, but I think we made a good tag team regardless. I learned early on that despite the names being in order of appointments, I can't assume that everyone will come perfectly one after another. An older lady was checking in and I assumed she was "Brenda" who was next on the list, but she had to correct me when I tried handing her the name tag, and pointed out her actual name on the list. I felt a little bad for assuming this must be Brenda not only because it was the next name, but also because, to me, she looked like someone who would be named Brenda. It was a small slip up, but I checked myself there, and always asked the name of the person after that. It was a generally enjoyable experience, though quite slow most of the time, that I would volunteer for again in the future. I enjoyed greeting people and had some nice conversations with my partner.

Burlington Animal Services (Elon Campus Program)

I attended the Toy Making with a Movie event for the Burlington Animal Shelter. Even though the movie didn't get around to working unfortunately, I still had an enjoyable time and learned how to make a cute pet toy! It was a casual sort of event where you could search up on your own pet toys to make out of yarn or other materials that were provided. When I gout there I found a friend who was making little puff balls that a cat would likely play with so I joined in. It was definitely more difficult than I thought, and my end result looked a little funny compared to my friend's, but I still enjoyed it and was happy to contribute to the huge amount of toys made and collected for the shelter.

    Morrowtown Community Garden

This time volunteering at Morrowtown was a lot different than my previous session. There were not as many people since the main construction of the garden was complete and all that was left to do was small things like tidying up, decorating, and planting flowers and fruits. I planted some sunflower seeds while learning about what flowers go well with what fruits which I didn't even realize was a thing, so it was really interesting to hear. I planted them next to the squash since they'll grow to be very large and provide shade to the larger fruits. We also decorated small rocks with markers and placed them in the beds and at the base of the trees around. The hardest task of the day was sawing wood planks in half which took about 4 or 5 of us taking turns to make a dent in it and others holding the plank still. My friend Alex was definitely the strongest out of all of us so we were very thankful for their hard work. I did some slightly less hard work of putting screws into said wood planks which was actually pretty fun. The rest of the day was mainly spent picking up trash around the garden and hanging out on the tire swings. Overall, it was still a really enjoyable experience and I'm glad I got to help out again and see the progress from the first time I was there.

    Morrowtown Community Garden

I enjoyed this experience a lot more than I originally thought i was going to, and I didn't realize that we were actually going to be building the garden from the ground up. I got to work on the painting team who were tasked to (you guessed it) paint the sides of the garden beds which has previously been primed. I was really excited to be able to do something I was familiar with and enjoyed, and I got to meet a few new faces as well. We all collaborated well to do the most efficient job we could. I even gained the honor of using the detail brush to paint the numbers on the beds which was previously not supposed to be a student's job. However, I and the rest of the team got a handful of compliments for how everything looks so I had a sense of fulfilment. I'm glad I got to work with such a supportive community of people, and it was really interesting to see the inner makings of how community gardens come to be. Despite the dirty clothes and the sore muscles I got the following day, I'm definitely signing up for this event again.

I served as a point of contact over zoom for 2 middle schools participating in AYLA. My job was to just be available to answer any questions or direct the teachers to someone else who could answer their questions. I didn't have to do much for most of it, there were only 2 instances where I responded to a question from either school. I also had the pleasure of sticking around to hear the results of the activities the schools engaged in, which was very interesting and entertaining to hear from the students themselves. They were very well spoken. I would definitely do this again.

I helped set up the beloved Elon tradition of the Luminaries festival. I was given a multitude of tasks to complete over the 3 hours, starting with placing candles in luminaries with 2 other people. This was easy enough to do, but I was getting a leg work out in from basically doing lunges every time I put a candle in. next I worked with a partner to add labels onto luminaries in the Academic Pavilion. I offered to do the peeling and sticking of labels since I had longer nails than my partner and could be a little more successful at it. My partner and I engage in some good conversation which was nice and helped the time pass by. Next, since it was windy, we were instructed to put rocks at the bottom of the luminaries to avoid them toppling over. While waiting for said rocks to be delivered, volunteers could indulge at the s'mores pop up stand which was a nice surprise. Placing in the rocks took up almost the remainder of the volunteering time, and my back was not enjoying the constant bending over and coming back up for over an hour. For the remaining 20 minutes or so after instructed to stop putting rocks in, I helped light a section of the luminaries. All in all, it was a fun experience and I have a new appreciation for the people who set up this event or even other events on campus. I got to work with friendly faces as well as meet some new people. However, I think I'd opt for a shorter shift next time as my legs, feet and back are now paying the price.
